Bumper Boat Battle

"Simple and fun!"

submission: Bumper Boat Battle
date: February 20, 2009

I don't understand all the hate for this little game. An enjoyable diversion with fun gameplay, decent physics, and attractive graphics. Upgrades weren't too difficult to achieve, and it was fun to putt around and smack enemies into the electric fence.

Well done Urbaniacs!

Infinite Chamber

"Molases"

submission: Infinite Chamber
date: February 14, 2009

It's a neat concept and a fun game in it's own right, but is part of the difficulty based on the fact that the controls are so sluggish and non-responsive? Crisp, quick reaction time between button presses and feedback is important in a game like this., so response optimization for the controls is needed before this can receive a higher rating.

Andagel

"There's a pipecleaner behind you!"

submission: Andagel
date: November 9, 2008

...and you can't possibly kill it!

"Quite possibly one of the" worst "games to hit Newgrounds to date!"

I tried to give this game a chance. But it's simply not fun to click a million times, knowing that your weapon takes as many as 20 shots to kill a single enemy, regardless of your skill and aim. The storyline is also contrived and forced -- insinuation is a great tool, and removes the need to explicitly detail an evil corporation's master plan to "quell our... competition, shall we say...". *Cue evil laughter and thunder* Even in a short game like this, realize that it's unnecessary to beat the gamer over the head with the obvious. Your introduction does just that. Dialogue is seemingly the most difficult part of the creation of any game, seeing as it's always written poorly and bluntly.

Andangel is a stylized cyberpunk first-person-shooter that falls flat. Not because it's created in Flash, but because of its poor execution and design choices, coupled with high production values. Unfortunately, those highs and lows do not offset each other, but only serve to accentuate the feeling that somehow, the ball was dropped and this game sucks despite a strong effort otherwise.

Author's Response:

your review feels like it was a 'real' review of my game. The last paragraph was like something i'd read in Edge magazine - youre a great writer:)

Good point about the subtlety. I actually just went out today and bought 'the art of game deign' by Jesse Schell and 'game feel' by Steve Swink. Both look really current and are brand new, and i think they'll help me answer some of the criticisms ive received for andagel in the next game.

Ill admit that id like to have more time to work on games so that i could give them the polish thats in my head, and i think the only way to do this is if i improve my skills and efficiency. There ISNT more time available so id better get REALLY good at doing what i do because in the end, i just love making games so i dont think im going to stop anytime soon:) I can honestly say i appreciate all the support and criticisms im receiving here because 1)its really valuable advice and information (for free no less:) ) and 2)it all becomes part of my experience and will help me next time.

Thanks for taking the time to write don't your thoughts - it was a really tight review and a good read. (actually, maybe ill run the script for the next one by you;) )

A Crow in Hell

"Lugaru?"

submission: A Crow in Hell
date: October 26, 2008

The music on the title screen is copied from Lugaru, an independently developed rabbit/kung-fu game developed by Wolfire. The author should mention if he has legitimate access to it.

The game itself is well-designed, aside from some areas in which it is almost necessary to die first and try again, even for the observant gamer who is looking for potential traps.

Orchestrated Death

"Entertaining"

submission: Orchestrated Death
date: October 2, 2008

Blending the chef's hand was one of the more enoyable things I've done today. And now I probably need to talk to a psychologist after making that comment.

Thanks for a great little diversion. Quick, short games like this are sometimes the most fun.

I wish I were the Moon

"Great job"

date: October 2, 2008

Call me crazy, but there's something "romantic" about pixel games. Their simple animations often leave the most lasting impressions, a unique legacy that the photorealism of many modern games can't match. How many of us remember Monkey Island, or Day of the Tentacle, or Full Throttle (and so many others) as our favorite games of all time?

Yeah, I'm getting a bit sentimental for a site like Newgrounds, but I truly feel these are the greatest games of all time. "I Wish I Were the Moon" somehow captures a piece of that magic, short as it is. Looking forward to your next submission.

Ownage Burst demo

"I've never clicked so much in my life."

submission: Ownage Burst demo
date: September 9, 2008

This is an excellent game, but oh, my aching fingers! Auto-fire would be nice, with a significant delay between each bullet (perhaps two shots per second). That way, there'd still be a strong advantage to clicking each shot rather than holding the mouse button down -- but the option to autofire would be there for those times when you want to trade efficiency and speed for comfort.

Ancillary

"Solid game marred by poor design decisions"

submission: Ancillary
date: August 20, 2008

Contrary to other reviewers, I do not think the gameplay itself is boring or so redundant that it cannot stand on it's own as an enjoyable game.

That's the good news.

Here's the bad:

Your responses to other reviewers are very inadequate. The links to other game sites need to be removed from the playing area, period. Telling people that you're sorry they didn't enjoy the game isn't helpful. Editing your upload for necessary changes is.

Additional information about the upgrades would be helpful. It's simple enough to understand that a damage upgrade will provide it's namesake. But I have no idea if I want to spend my very sparse, rationed points on sonic displacement, disruption shields, and bounties since you provide no documentation on what they do.

Author's Response:

I believe I've listed everything you need to know about the upgrades in the 'Upgrades Tab'. (Located on the main menu in the Instructions sub-categories)
